THE BUZZ: A long-serving California House incumbent fending off a base-energizing Democratic challenger. Supporters are hoping for a generational change of the guard, saying their blue-shading district shouldn’t be electing conservatives anymore.

With one month to go until California's March 3 primary, Democratic candidate Tracie Stafford opened a campaign office yesterday in Sacramento in her challenge for the California Assembly's 9th District seat. The opening event was accompanied by precinct walks by several supporters and volunteers' in attendance.

Tracie Stafford will run against Assembly Member Jim Cooper, D-Elk Grove, in Assembly District 9’s primary election in March. She previously ran for Elk Grove mayor in 2016 and 2018.

District 9, which includes Elk Grove, extends from south Sacramento to Lodi.

Also planning to challenge Cooper are Democrat Mushtaq Tahirkheil, and Peace and Freedom Party candidate Dennis Terrill.

In this time of deepening political divisions, people on opposite ends of the political spectrum are not only disagreeing, but outwardly and aggressively sparring.

Many northern California voters say they have had enough. But civility is possible, even when discussing the toughest topics.

An iron skillet became our family’s symbol of fighting back when my grandmother used it to protect herself from a violent husband, ending her abuse. Sadly, it was not the end of abuse in our family, as both my mother and myself had to overcome domestic violence and worse.

I am excited to officially announce that I am running for California State Assembly to represent the residents of Elk Grove, Galt, Lodi and South Sacramento. I am running to give a voice to the people of this district who work every day to put food on the table, pay the rising cost of housing, raise kids and care for aging parents, all while turning over more and more of our paychecks to the rising costs of health care, housing, and transportation.
